Follow this simple recipe for how to make caramel apples and decorate each one so they are unique.
10 Fuji or Granny Smith apples
10 wooden skewers
1 cup butter
2 cups dark brown sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
2 ½ tsp. vanilla extract
decorative toppings
Insert wooden sticks through the tops of the apples so that the stick is about 3/4 the way in the apple. Combine the butter, sugar, corn syrup and condensed milk in sauce pan and put on high heat. Bring the mixture to a boil for about 35 minutes. Do not stir the caramel until it is dark and thick. Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Dip the apples into the caramel at an angle. Raise the apple out of the caramel, vertically, and let the caramel drip off of the apple. Hold the stick in your hand, with the apple side up and allow the caramel to settle on the apple.
Decorate the caramel apples with sprinkles, nuts, Reese’s Pieces, candy corn, etc. before they completely dry. When they're done, line the apples up on a greased wax paper. If you wish to use your homemade caramel apples as party favors, wait until they’ve cooled and wrap them in clear cellophane and tie them off with a pretty ribbon!
